Finding a Tutor
How do I find a tutor on MatheCord?
Open the MatheTutor Directory and filter it down. You can narrow by topic, price, country, language, time zone, session type and the specific days you are free. Every profile shows the tutor's hourly rate, the topics they teach, their weekly availability and their own booking link, so you can read the whole thing before you contact anyone.
How much do tutors charge?
Each tutor sets their own rate and writes it on their profile, so it varies. Nobody sets a floor or a ceiling for them. Because MatheCord takes no commission, tutors here can charge less than they would on a marketplace that takes a cut and still take home more.
Does MatheCord take a cut of what I pay my tutor?
No. Tutors keep 100% of their session fees. You pay your tutor directly through their own payment link, so the money never passes through MatheCord. Your subscription pays for access to the platform and the community, and that is separate from the tutoring fee.
Can I see when a tutor is available before I message them?
Yes, in two places. Every profile has a full weekly availability grid covering all seven days, with a time range for each day or a note that they are unavailable. Treat that as the tutor’s usual week rather than a live calendar. The Book button on the profile opens the tutor’s own booking link, which is where you will find their real openings and can reserve a slot. It is still worth confirming the exact time with them when you speak.
Do I have to use Discord?
Yes. You browse the directory on the website, and your conversation with a tutor happens in a support ticket in the MatheCord Discord server. That is deliberate: it means the MatheCord team can review the conversation instead of it happening in a private inbox, and it applies to the whole conversation, not just the first message. Sessions themselves run on Lessonspace or wherever your tutor prefers. There is a full walkthrough on the tutoring page.
What happens if a tutor cancels or does not show up?
If a MatheTutor cancels a session they are required to give you a full refund of that session fee or offer a makeup session at a time you both agree. If that does not happen, open a support ticket. MatheCord does not hold payments, so we cannot issue a refund ourselves, but we investigate every report and can cancel a tutor's subscription and ban them from the server.
Why do I need a subscription just to browse tutors?
Keeping the directory members only is what lets us review the conversations that follow and stops tutors being cold messaged by anyone who lands on the page. Every plan starts with a free trial, three days on weekly plans and seven days on monthly and annual, so you can look before you commit.
General & Getting Started
Is MatheCord open to all ages?
Yes, MatheCord welcomes everyone. Because MatheTutors are independent educators and are not vetted by MatheCord, we strongly recommend that a parent or guardian supervises anyone under 18 during tutoring sessions. Every profile has space for a bio and certifications, and you are encouraged to ask a tutor for further credentials before you book. Please leave a review in the dedicated review channel after your sessions, and report anything suspicious to the admin team.
Is MatheCord available worldwide?
Yes. Tutors and students join from all over the world, which is why the directory lets you filter by country, time zone and language.
How do I upgrade my role from MatheGuest?
Head to the subscription plans on the MatheCord website, or go straight to MatheCord plans on Whop and pick the plan that fits. After subscribing there is a one time Connect Account step on Whop that links your Discord, and your role appears once that is done.
What is the difference between the student and tutor plans?
A MatheStudent plan opens the tutor directory so you can browse profiles and message tutors. A MatheTutor plan lets you build and publish your own profile so students can find you. MatheDuo covers both. There is a breakdown of what each side pays for on the tutoring page.
How do I stay updated on events, workshops and new resources?
Opt in for updates when you subscribe, or sign up for the newsletter on the website. Both put you on the mailing list. Announcements also go out in the Discord server, and following MatheCord on social media is another way to keep up.
Does MatheCord have an affiliate program?
Yes. You earn a 20% commission for promoting MatheCord and its subscription plans through your own referral link. See the MatheCord Affiliate Program page or ask in Discord for details.
What if I have a question that is not answered here?
Ask in the Ask Anything channel on Discord, or open a support ticket for anything specific to your account.
For Students
How do I message a tutor once I have found one?
Press Message on their card or profile. Their Discord name copies to your clipboard automatically and the ticket link opens. Paste that name into the ticket form and the bot adds the tutor to your ticket and tags them, so they get a real notification. Keep talking to them in that ticket rather than moving to private messages.
How do I pay for a session?
Directly to your tutor, using the payment link on their profile. MatheCord does not process, hold or refund session payments, so agree the amount and the method with your tutor before the session.
How do I get the most out of a tutoring session?
- Say what you need: tell your tutor the specific topics and problems you are stuck on so the session is built around them.
- Try their approach: a different explanation is often the thing that makes it click.
- Ask as you go: stop them the moment something stops making sense.
- Practise in between: work problems on your own and bring the ones that beat you to the next session.
- Tell them what works: your tutor can only adjust if you say what is helping.
Where do the sessions actually happen?
Wherever your tutor prefers. Many use Lessonspace, which MatheCord provides and which records sessions for the protection of both sides. Tutors are free to use another platform if they would rather.
How do I leave a review, and why does it matter?
There is a dedicated tutor review channel in the Discord server. Leaving a review after your sessions helps other students choose well, and it gives tutors something to work from. Reading the existing reviews before you book is one of the better ways to judge someone, since MatheCord does not vet tutors.
For Tutors
How do I start tutoring on MatheCord?
Subscribe to a MatheTutor plan, then go to Become a Tutor and build your profile. It takes about ten minutes. Once you publish, your profile appears in the tutor directory on the website and posts itself into the relevant Discord topic channels at the same time.
What goes on my profile?
A photo, your name and a professional, detailed About Me, your hourly rate in your own currency, the topics you teach, your country, time zone and languages, whether you do one on one or group sessions or both, availability for all seven days, and your own booking and payment links. You can also upload a resume, a contract and certifications.
Do I really keep everything I charge?
Yes. MatheCord takes no commission and no booking fee. Students pay you through your own payment link, so the money never touches us. Your MatheTutor subscription is the only thing you pay.
Am I an employee of MatheCord?
No. MatheTutors are independent contractors. You are responsible for your own scheduling, lesson planning, teaching style, contracts, pricing, payment collection and taxes. MatheCord hosts your profile, puts you in front of students and reviews the conversation in the ticket.
How do I get more students?
Two things work better than anything else. Host a workshop in the Discord server, on your own or with help from the team promoting it. And be visible in the community, answering questions in the main chat and the Ask Anything channel. Students hire the tutor whose explanation already helped them once.
Can I offer group sessions?
Yes. Session type is a field on your profile, so you can offer one on one, group, or both, and students can filter by it.
Can I edit or remove my profile?
Yes, at any time. Edit it from the same page you created it on. If your subscription lapses your profile is hidden from the directory and removed from Discord automatically, and it comes back if you resubscribe.
Is there anywhere for tutors to talk to each other?
Yes, the MatheTutor Lounge is a channel just for tutors, for comparing notes on teaching approaches and how people are running their sessions.
Safety & Support
Does MatheCord vet or background check tutors?
No. Tutors are independent educators and MatheCord does not run checks on them. That is why we ask you to read the whole profile, request credentials before you book, check the reviews channel, and supervise sessions for anyone under 18. If something looks suspicious, open a support ticket and the MatheCord team will investigate.
What should I do if there is a dispute with a tutor or a student?
Open a support ticket so the admin team can look into it. MatheCord does not insure or hold payments for tutoring sessions, since those are handled directly between the two of you. Where a payment dispute happens, for example a tutor takes payment and does not attend, or a student does not pay after a session, we investigate and can cancel subscriptions and ban whoever is responsible.
Why does communication have to go through a ticket?
So it is not a private inbox. A ticket is visible to the MatheCord team, which means there is a record if anything goes wrong and nobody can be cold messaged by a stranger. This applies to the whole conversation and not only the introduction, so keep scheduling and any questions between sessions in the ticket too. It is the main safety feature on the platform.
Are sessions recorded?
Sessions run on Lessonspace are recorded for quality and safety, which protects both the tutor and the student if there is ever a disagreement. If you would rather not be recorded, tell your tutor before the session starts.
Should I meet a tutor in person?
No. MatheCord is an online platform only and we strongly discourage in person meetings. If people choose to meet anyway, MatheCord is not responsible for what happens.
