Most people reach for their phone the moment they need to do any math. But a handful of simple shortcuts can make you surprisingly fast with numbers in your head. These are not party tricks. They are practical techniques that save time at the store, in class, and anywhere else numbers show up.
1 Multiply by 9 Using Your Fingers
Hold up both hands with all ten fingers out. To multiply 9 by any number from 1 to 10, fold down the finger that matches that number, counting from the left. The fingers to the left of the folded one are your tens, and the fingers to the right are your ones. For example, 9 times 4: fold your fourth finger, and you will see 3 fingers on the left and 6 on the right. That gives you 36.
2 The 11 Trick for Two-Digit Numbers
To multiply any two-digit number by 11, split the digits and put their sum in the middle. For example, 36 times 11: split the 3 and 6, add them (3 + 6 = 9), and place the 9 between them to get 396. If the sum is more than 9, carry the 1 over. So 78 times 11: 7 + 8 = 15, put the 5 in the middle and add 1 to the 7, giving you 858.
3 Squaring Numbers That End in 5
Take the first digit, multiply it by the next whole number up, then stick 25 on the end. So 35 squared: 3 times 4 = 12, then add 25 to get 1225. It works every time. 75 squared: 7 times 8 = 56, so the answer is 5625. Once you see the pattern, it takes about two seconds.
4 Subtracting from 1000
Subtract each digit from 9, except the last one which you subtract from 10. For 1000 minus 637: 9 minus 6 is 3, 9 minus 3 is 6, 10 minus 7 is 3. Answer: 363. This works because you are using the complement method, and it removes the need to borrow across zeros.
5 Doubling and Halving to Simplify Multiplication
If one of the numbers in a multiplication is awkward, try doubling one and halving the other. The product stays the same. For example, 25 times 48 is hard to do in your head, but half of 48 is 24 and double 25 is 50. Now you just need 50 times 24, which is 1200. Much easier.
6 Percentages Work Both Ways
Here is one most people never think about: 8% of 50 is the same as 50% of 8. Whichever version is easier, use that one. 50% of 8 is obviously 4. So 8% of 50 is also 4. This works because multiplication is commutative. Whenever a percentage question feels hard, try flipping it around.
7 Multiplying by 5 the Fast Way
Instead of multiplying by 5 directly, multiply by 10 and then divide by 2. So 5 times 84: do 84 times 10 = 840, then cut it in half to get 420. Division by 2 is almost always faster than multiplication by 5, especially with larger numbers.
8 Checking Your Work with Casting Out Nines
Add up the digits of each number you multiplied, reducing to a single digit. Do the same for your answer. If the products of the reduced digits do not match the reduced answer, you made an error somewhere. For example, 23 times 14 = 322. Digit sums: 2+3 = 5, 1+4 = 5, and 5 times 5 = 25, which reduces to 7. The digit sum of 322 is 3+2+2 = 7. They match, so the answer checks out.
